I have had this problem for about a year or so on a 2011 iMac. The problem seems worse on a new iMac Pro. 1) Use Firefox in one Mac user account 2) Login to a new user account (without logging out of the first) 3) Use Firefox in 2nd user account 4) Fast switch back to 1st user account 5) Firefox appears unresponsive. The OP stated Firefox wasn't in the Activity Monitor. If it doesn't show up under My Processes, they may wish to set the dropbox menu to All Processes. I would suggest upgrading to the latest version of Firefox and then I would run a check of the disk permissions and, if necessary, repair them. Go to ApplicationsUtilitiesDisk Utility. Firefox keeps freezing on my Mac, and it's really, really frustrating. It freezes when it's loading pages, it freezes in the middle of me reading a page.it freezes a lot. When it freezes, often I have to wait until I can force quit it, or else I have to reboot the whole system to get Firefox to shut down. I've installed Opera, and it doesn't seem to hang on the same kinds of things Firefox. Aug 26, 2015 I blamed Firefox for 2 days that my computer keeps freezing, but turns out it's only on #Amazon! Just spins merrily along. @amazon — Donna Barstow (@cartooness) August 12, 2015. @amazon your website has frozen my Mac twice. Using Firefox. Latest OSX updates. — I support radicals. You know that frustrating, annoying, sometimes panicked feeling you get when your Mac isn’t doing what you expect? If an application freezes or your computer is generally misbehaving, try these tips to escape with minimal disruption.
- Use Force Quit when an application is unresponsive. Choose Force Quit from the Apple menu or press Command+Option+Esc keys. Click the name of the deviant application (it probably has not responding next to its name). You typically won’t have to reboot.
- No limits 2 free mac. Restart. If Force Quit doesn’t bail you out, try rebooting the computer. If a frozen Mac prevents you from clicking the Restart command on the Apple menu, hold down the power button for several seconds or press the Control+Command keys and then press the power button. If all else fails, pull the plug, but remember that powering down without logging out should be used only as a last resort.
- Restart in Safe Mode. Press the power button to turn on your computer, and then press and hold the Shift key the instant you hear the welcome chime. Release Shift when the Apple logo appears. You will see a status bar as the computer boots, after which the words Safe Boot appear in red in the upper right corner of OS X’s login screen. In Safe mode, the Mac unleashes a series of troubleshooting steps designed to return the computer to good health. If Safe Boot resolved the issue, restart the Mac normally the next time.
Since early August, visitors to online retailer Amazon.com have been complaining about the website causing Firefox or Safari to crash on Mac and Windows with some instances being bad enough to cause a Blue Screen of Death (BSoD). The company has not yet responded to the complaints that continue to pile up on the Amazon feedback forum, Firefox’s bug tracker, and the Apple support forums.
One solution is to avoid Amazon’s main page and instead use a light version at www.amazon.com/access. (Clear your cookies to return to the full site.) Different tags for Chrome and IE allow those browsers to access the site. Switching browsers is one work-around. You might also be able to use the Firefox NoScript extension to block ssl-images-amazon script though that might negatively impact the site behavior but at least it won’t crash. In Safari, you can go to Preferences, Security and uncheck Enable JavaScript. It seems Safari on iOS is even impacted. Others are indicating that the browser and ATI graphics hardware combination as the reason for the more severe crashes.
The issue seemed to begin August 6th and has since garnered hundreds of ‘me too’ posts on the forums of the different organizations impacted (Amazon, Apple, and Mozilla). Twitter users have also chimed in to report their experience. We will reach out to Amazon for comment and update the post accordingly. (No response yet.)
